GALAPAGOS
ISLANDS - BRIEF DESCRIPTION
These famous islands are part of the Ecuadorian
territory. On 1835 Charles Darwin visited them and it permitted him to
develop his Theory of Evolution of Species. Galapagos are composed of
13 main islands, 6 small islands and around 43 islets.
Isabela: This is the largest
island. You will see Darwin Salt lake, giant tortoises, petrified
coral, lava formations, penguins, flightless cormorants, blue-footed
boobies, hundred of marine birds and an active volcano.
Fernandina: One of the most volcanically active island. You
will see black lava rocks, mangroves, pelicans, frigate birds, flightless
cormorants, petrels, marine iguanas and mangrove finches.

Santa Cruz: Home of the Charles Darwin Station and Galapagos Park
Service. You will see the twin craters, lava tunnels and the tortoise
reserve. Its main town, Puerto Ayora, have hotels, restaurants, shops
and others. Also this island has good places for diving.
San Cristobal: The capital of Galápagos Islands, Puerto Baquerizo
Moreno, is here. There is an Interpretation Center that gives information
about Galapagos. This island also has an airport.

Española (Hood Island): Sea lions and mocking birds. Nests of
blue footed Bobbies, masked boobies, colonies of marine iguanas and
waved albatross, and the famous "Blow hole".
Floreana: Pink flamingos lagoon and a white sandy
beach where marine turtles nest. The "Devil's Crown" with
coral formations where it is possible to snorkel or dive. Also this
island has a mystery of the first families who arrived to live here.

Santiago: Lava formations
and a colony of fur seals. Galapagos hawk and some species of Darwin´s
finches are also found.
Baltra: This island was an airbase for the United States during
second war. Nowadays is one of the airports in Galapagos.
Bartolome: Probably the most photographed island
for its spectacular view of the two bays and Pinnacle rock. Lava formations
and ash cones. It is possible to swim and snorkel with penguins and
sea lions.
Genovesa: Frigate birds, red footed and masked boobies. In
this island lives 4 species of Darwin´s finches.

Rabida: Red colored beaches. Flamingos and pelicans lagoon. Sea lions are always seen when disembarking.
South Plazas: Big colony of sea lions. Marine and land iguanas.
Santa Fe: Land iguanas, lava lizards and sea lions colonies.
Seymour: Frigate birds, blue-footed boobies, swallow-tailed gulls, land iguanas, pelicans and red-billed tropicbirds. |
